What do we train?
We train traditional Filipino Combat Arts (aka. eskrima, arnis, kali) which are a balance of Sword, Knife and Emty Hand (punching, kicking, etc.) skills. We test everything we train and are commited to the integrity of only training effective fighting and self defense methods. We will not waste your time showing you compliant drills, and 1001 techniques that you merely memorize. Instead you earn you ability, the traditional way, through the active one on one sharing of knowledge and experience.
Are beginners welcome?
Of course!! Please come and check us out, our training program is designed for both beginning and advanced players. No one is born a fighter, instead they are developed. Here at the Philippine Combat Arts Club, our coaches pride themselves in their dedication towards traditional escrima, arnis, kali standards in bringing out the best fighting potential of every member, young, old, experienced or completely new to martial arts in general.
Will I get a workout?
Yes. The benefits of any intense martial art are be found in our training. We employ many methods in our training that work cardio and strength.
Is this like fencing, Kendo or other "sport fighting" arts?
Sport specific training (e.g. kendo or western fencing), emphasizes staying within the rules of the sport and the scoring of points, whereas traditional Filipino Combat Arts, such as eskrima, arnis, or kali stress success and survival in combat first and foremost. This means we train to succeed in a fight whether or not there is a referee or judge to declare a winner. However, we do feel competition is important, and also actively compete, to insure the quality of our training. If you cannot handle the stress of a competition with rules and a referee looking to keep you safe, how can you hope to handle a real life self defense scenario.
What do I need to start training?
You will need two rattan training sticks and a training knife. For your first class we have loaners for you to use.
What should I wear?
Clothes that are comfortable and practicle to train in. An example would be a tee shirt and sweat suit/warm up bottoms, gi pants are ideal for starting out. We prefer that you have bare feet when training.
